Ohio officials say that Asian carp DNA was found in one water sample of hundreds taken from northern Ohio rivers that feed into Lake Erie.
According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the positive DNA result occurred one time in 225 samples from the Maumee River. 100 samples were also taken from the Sandusky River, and no trace of Asian carp genetic material was found among these samples.
No evidence of live Asian carp was found, however, there may still be some of the invasive species living in Ohio waters. Dr. Carol Stepien, director of the Lake Erie Center, says that she believes that Asian carp are already in Northwest Ohio, stating:
